Highlighting the best of YA fantasy

If you haven’t yet read Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles—or have been holding off on starting until you could read the entire series—then the concluding volume, Winter, is definitely not to be missed. Coming in at 832 pages, this book is definitely long—but Meyer is such a wonderful writer and storyteller that the pages fly by. I’ve been a huge fan of this series since Cinder, and Winter was a wonderful end to the story.

Winter by Marissa Meyer

Princess Winter is admired by the Lunar people for her grace and kindness, and despite the scars that mar her face, her beauty is said to be even more breathtaking than that of her stepmother, Queen Levana.

Winter despises her stepmother, and knows Levana won’t approve of her feelings for her childhood friend—the handsome palace guard, Jacin. But Winter isn’t as weak as Levana believes her to be and she’s been undermining her stepmother’s wishes for years. Together with the cyborg mechanic, Cinder, and her allies, Winter might even have the power to launch a revolution and win a war that’s been raging for far too long.

These Broken Stars is the first of the Starbound Trilogy—all of which have gorgeous covers. The cover was what first drew my eye and made me give the book a try, but the story inside is just as fantastic. The world building and the prose are lush and beautiful, but it’s the love story between Lilac and Tarver that most carried me away.

Winter by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they're worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Highlighting the best of YA fantasy

The Faerie Guardian is the first book in Rachel Morgan’s Creepy Hollow series. And it’s free! Always a good thing. I really enjoyed the book and the fresh take on the Seelie/Unseelie fairy courts. Violet is a tough, smart, and very capable heroine– definitely not a damsel in distress– and I really enjoyed her voice. There are currently five books out in the Creepy Hollow series, so start here and you may well get hooked.

The Faerie Guardian by Rachel Morgan

Seventeen-year-old Violet Fairdale has one job: protect humans from dangerous magical creatures. It's a job she's good at—until her latest assignment, a cute human guy who can somehow see through her faerie glamour, follows her into the fae realm. Now she's broken Guild law and risked her future as the top graduate of her class.

The last thing Vi wants to do is spend any more time with the guy who got her into this mess, but the Guild requires that she return Nate to his home and make him forget everything he's discovered of the fae realm.

Crimson Bound was one of the most inventive Little Red Riding Hood retellings I’ve ever read. The setting and the world building (a kind of alternate universe Court of Versailles) are amazing. The romantic arc felt a bit rushed to me—I think it could have easily been spread out over a few books, rather than rushed through in just the few days covered by this one– but at the same time, I loved the story of two very damaged people coming together and beginning to believe in a future for themselves again.

Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge

When Rachelle was fifteen she was good—apprenticed to her aunt and in training to protect her village from dark magic. But she was also reckless—straying from the forest path in search of a way to free her world from the threat of eternal darkness. After an illicit meeting goes dreadfully wrong, Rachelle is forced to make a terrible choice that binds her to the very evil she had hoped to defeat.

Three years later, Rachelle has given her life to serving the realm, fighting deadly creatures in a vain effort to atone. When the king orders her to guard his son Armand—the man she hates most—Rachelle forces Armand to help her hunt for the legendary sword that might save their world.
